Remembering Galveston

For Pink Saturday I thought I would use the opportunity to remember Galveston - that beautiful city on the Gulf....and pause to remember the people of Galveston and all the Gulf Coast residents. Galveston was home to lush foliage - beautiful pink oleanders and bougainvillas. I know that these will be replanted and it won't take long for them to replace the lost ones. Ahh, but the majetic palms there will
take a much longer time. Growing up in a tropical paradise similar to Galveston the streets of my hometown were lined with gorgeous palms like these and we lost most of them to disease a few years ago. I'm sure that those trees lost to Ike's fury will be replanted but, like McAllen, they won't be this majestic in my lifetime. What a beautiful memory. The Blessing of the Ships - a wonderful tradition.

Beautiful old churches and historical buildings.
Maybe these were spared.
One of our online friends, Sarah at Gypsy Mermaid Life, lost her home to the hurricaine and my heart goes out to her. Let's keep all the Gulf Coast folks in our prayers. And may Our Lady of the Seas watch over them.Nancy

Thanks Beverly at How Sweet the Sound for hosting Pink Saturday.

  3. Nancy, what a beautiful post!! Thank you for those lovely pictures. We have lived down here for going on our fifth year, of course we were Texans, just panhandle ones and I haven't been to Galveston yet. We have been to Corpus, and Mustang Island, wanted to go with friends this summer, it just didn't work out. I know it was a beautiful city and will be again, my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone!! Especially Sarah!! I am so sorry, I know that is so hard. She will be in my prayers. I am wanting to purchase a couple of your goodies next week after payday. GinGin

  5. I love vintage postcards, and yours were just beautiful. It's so poignant to see those scenes and compare them with the devastation on the news. I've only been to Galveston once as a child. My heart goes out to all those who've suffered so much loss.

  14. The Galveston loss is just so sad! I grew up in the Houston area and my parents still live there (they are still without electricity and have been told that Sept. 25th will be the earliest they will get it back) and I hate that so much of what I remember about Galveston is now gone or in shambles. Also, the Kemah area which has been a favorite visiting spot has been demolished. Thanks for posting those lovely pictures. Keep everyone there in your hearts and prayers......

  19. Thanks for the beautiful tribute. I lived in the Houston area and spent a lot of time in Galveston for fun and sometimes with business. A dear friend's family owned a historic home that survived the 1900 storm... wonder if it made it through this one. The Galveston Historical society estimates that 1,500 of the 7,000+ historical structures on the island were severely damaged or destroyed. My heart goes out to all the people of Galveston and the Houston area who were hit hard by this storm. I saw news footage of so many places that were my old stomping grounds, and it really is heartbreaking. The restaurant where my husband and I had our first date, as well as the place where we had our rehersal dinner are gutted. It will be a long recovery ahead...

  23. My hubby and I had intended all summer long to head down there for a few days...now...too late. Galveston is a magical place in it's own right...I hope they will rebuild stronger and better than ever.
