The Painted Churches of Texas surely rank as one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
“Inside, each is decorated in a profusion of color, with nearly every surface covered in bright paint. German and Czech immigrants fleeing the Austrian Empire celebrated religious freedom found here in Texas by decorating humble Texas churches with glorious interiors. “
There are five of these churches located near Schulenburg, Texas.
They are simple country churches that are painted to resemble the cathedrals of the homelands from which they came.
Some were painted by parishioners, some by artists and they are all spectacular.
Finding beauty so close to home – such a blessing!

ReplyDeleteOh Nancy sweetie...
ReplyDeleteThese little churches are spectacular. They are a glimpse of what God has waiting to share with us when we come home. The St. Francis Catholic church in Enid, OK has the same beautiful paintings throughout and stain glass windows. So beautiful to hear the word of God and be surrounded by such beauty. It makes the sermon that much more real. Thank you so much for sharing this piece of your town history with me today. You have given me a "Happy Heart".
Country hugs sweetie...Sherry
You did find some real beauty right there in Texas, these churches are spectacular. From the outside you just wouldn't suspect that you would walk into such glorious work. Not that the outside isn't beautiful, but oh my, the inside takes my breath away!
ReplyDeleteThese country churches are absolutely beautiful. I had no idea that they existed. I would love to attend mass at one of them.
ReplyDeleteGirl, I had no idea of the painted churches. I have probably been right there and seen them from the outside. TFS!
ReplyDeleteIf memory serves...we've been to one of those and yes, it truly takes your breath away.
