Adios Summer From Hell

I feel like celebrating…it’s almost September and if there is anything I love it’s September because even though it’s probably still going to be 103 degrees  there’s always a chance for cooler weather.  Not that I’ve mentioned it but I’ve been in a leg brace all summer after I tore my quadriceps tendon less than a week after I had a knee replacement.
The good news is finally, after being unable to bend it for 2 months, I got to start therapy.

Here  I am getting physical therapy.  Okay sort of…it’s really more like…

this!  At least I got the brace off while they worked on my leg and even better was an okay after 4 weeks to shower without it.  I had a major case of leg dandruff and scaly skin.

After not going anywhere for six weeks other than the hospital and doctor and therapy…I finally got to go to bunco – not to play but at least for dinner and to see my bunco buds. Plus, it was my turn to cohost and bring dessert and prizes.  I was totally out of ideas for prizes so I bought those cushiony dish drying mats and a dishcloth and made a little poem I found online…author unknown.  I have no idea if they liked them because I was gone by then since it was too hard to be able to get out of a chair 18 times with the brace! I wrapped a couple of them in pink just so I’d have something to blog about for Pink Saturday!

2013-08-21 Brandon's birthday 005

Then my darling grandson left for college. Sniff sniff!  I had a few tears but then about an hour later the YaYa's arrived and brought all the goodies for tea.
Off to college 011

All I had to do was set the table….
teatime 003
and they brought an amazing array of tea goodies and
048
of course some sort of “rita” as in Marga which was delish!  Oh my gosh I love these girls.
They have all been so wonderful through my whole ordeal bringing some amazing meals. Here’s LaVerne celebrating her birthday with the YaYa paparazzi.  Actually next weekend there’s some sort of Aug/Sept birthday surprise for LaVerne and me but this was one day after LaVerne’s birthday so why pass up a chance to celebrate. Right?

So the next weekend it was my son’s birthday and we drove down to pick up the grandson for a birthday lunch with his dad.

I was thrilled to see him since it had been a whole week!

Then after about 3 weeks of therapy at my checkup at the Drs I got the best news……..

2013-08-29 brace 004A
No more brace.  I did so well in therapy I was far ahead of what he expected.  I sort of felt like I had a jello leg and walked sort of wobbly but oh my gosh I was so thrilled. And today I started pool therapy and it felt sooo fabulous.  Too bad I can’t walk around in a water bubble ‘cause it just felt so easy! Still have a long way to go but there’s light at the end of the tunnel.  Why have I never thought of water exercising? I love the place I’m going – the water is like 89 degrees – perfect for achiness plus it’s pretty and better yet they have two dogs running around the rehab part.  I love places that have pets!

AND!!!!!!!! tomorrow is the start of college football – the Buckeyes are playing at eleven and the Longhorns at two! To top it off, it’s been an entire week since we’ve seen the grandson and he came home today to go to his old high school’s first football game so he’ll be here until Monday.
That’s it for me.

  1. Looks like you have had a happy start of fall...hope the Buckeyes and the Horns are victorious...Your pictures from our tea are beautiful! I still have red, white, and blue for Labor Day, but come Monday...I'm dragging out the leaves and pumpkins! I'm going to snub the rest of this dreadful heat and start thinking of changing seasons. Sooooo glad your knee brace days are behind you!

  4. What great news about your leg!!!! I hope you had a Leg Brace Bonfire to celebrate your release from that contraption as well as a nod to the beginning og college football!! :) So glad you are enjoying your grand son's visit from college, too!!

I have never done water exercise, but those I know who have/do really like it, too! I'm so glad that's bringing you relief and theraputic improvement. And I hope you can continue some form of that after you are all well and rehabbed!

You've had the summer from heck for sure. . .I can't even begin to imagine how miserable all of this has been for you, Nancy. I am thrilled you are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I know you truly do apprectiate all of the love and support you've received from your family and your awesome YaYas!! What a great group! Also...love the Bunco gifts you put together.....what a great idea!!

Our group did your 10 miles run/walk early this a.m.....it was in the dark the first 30 min. I have a little light pac that clips on the brim of my hat, so that illuminated the trail for three of us, the three behind us had a flashlight. I just worry about rolling an ankle on some object (or critter) if I can't see where I'm going. Once the sun started coming up it was perfect for another hour, then it was really toasty for the rest of the run. I think the high today was in the upper 90s..not as miserable as yesterday. So...it was a good thing we got a bunch of the run in while it was dark. I'm feeling that distance tonight. My muscles are reminding me of how very ancient they are!! ha ha! I'll be better in the a.m. I didn't get a chance to rest very long after the run, as Bonnie came by and took me to a sale in a nearby town. So...we spent good chunk of the rest of the day WALKING and eating (bad, bad food that tasted so very yummy!)

Well...this is all such great news, Nancy!!! Hope you have a great Labor Day weekend and a happy Pink Saturday! L, Dana

  5. Hi Nancy, Well, you have had a heck of a summer. I am glad things are looking up for you. The brace had to be awful. I can't think of anything nicer that a tea party with yummy food to celebrate except having dear friends to bring it to you. Loved the photos.

We have a grandson and granddaughter that just started college this week at the Univ of Florida. We are so proud of them. Cody was accepted in the band and already played and marched at the first football game today. We have season tickets but were unable to go to the game today. Sigh! Since we now live in NC it is a long drive but we do go to most of the home games. Our daughters live in Fl. and our girls and their husband's are Fl. alumni. Each one sent their first child off and their was a few tears for sure. We can't wait to go to the next game. Your grandson is so handsome. I bet he is thrilled to go to college and be on his own. Our grands sure are.

Good luck with therapy. It is hard and I am speaking from two knee replacements. You gotta be tough but I have faith that you will give it your all.

    Happy Labor Day weekend.
    Love, Jeanne
